In short phrases (#1 and #2), ~teen can be thought of as a separate word in terms of
intonation. In longer phrases, the number + ~teen becomes one word. Repeat after me.

1. How old is he? 2. How long has it been? 3. How old is he?
He's fourteen. Fourteen years. He's fourteen years old.
He's forty. Forty years. He's forty years old.
